All of Kewtech’s PAT testers have measuring ranges that comply with the latest Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment edition 5 (COP 5)

The COP 5 has improved the standard by giving more clarity and better guidance for testing of electrical equipment.

An important change is the emphasis of the value of the 250V insulation test as an option instead of 500 V. Kewtech welcome this and all our product have had this function for sometime.

The COP5 clearly states that In-service testing requires the following to be completed and in the order shown:
(a) a protective conductor continuity test on Class I equipment
(b) an insulation resistance test
(c) if required, a protective conductor current/touch current test
(d) a functional check of the equipment.

Interpretation of results – earth continuity

The limit on the protective conductor continuity test on Class I equipment. The pass limit is variable and it is for the user to understand the limit based on the formula 0.1Ω plus R where R is the resistance of the protective conductor of the supply cable. There has been no change here from the COP 4 except for the addition of an allowance for older equipment which is 0.5Ω. It is the user to evaluate the displayed test result against the applicable limit.

Insulation Tests

The COP 5 says “Insulation resistance is normally measured by applying a test voltage of 500 V DC between the live conductors and the protective conductor and measuring the resistance. This test may not always be suitable because it may damage IT equipment or other equipment containing electronic components. Therefore, a more appropriate alternative may be one of the following:
(a) conducting the test at a reduced voltage of 250 V DC; or
(b) measuring the protective conductor and/or touch current “

A big change is that Substitute Leakage tests are no longer recognised. This puts the feature set of the EZYPAT PLUS & SMARTPAT in an attractive position as they both offer protective conductor & touch current testing capability. Another nicety is that they can do this at 110V & 230V.

All Kewtech testers have a pass level for class II at 0.25 and class I at 0.75/3.50mA the new COP 5 has increased this to 5mA across all products. This means that the EZYPAT and EZYPAT Plus err on the side of safety with this regard. The user, as in the case of the earth bond test simply has to determine if the measured value displayed is less than 5mA. The COP5 is somewhat easier than the COP4 as there is only one limit as opposed to several.

The SMARTPAT has the user selectable limits when using the KEWPAT APP which gives the user ultimate control

Functional Earth:

There has been much talk about equipment that is class II but has an earth connection for its operation.

COP5 says: “Some equipment, such as laptop computer power supply units may have accessible metal parts (e.g. the DC plug) that are earthed only for functional or screening purposes with protection against electric shock being provided by double or reinforced insulation. As these earth connections are not provided for safety reasons there is no requirement to test them, and in fact damage could be caused if a high current test is carried out. If a continuity test is carried out on functional earths, the observed reading may be higher than the values in Table 10.1 but this would not usually indicate a problem.”
