According to the NHBC Foundation, homes could be severely damaged from rain penertration and wind damage due to the poor installation of PV systems and micro windturbines.
The popularity of renewable energy systems, being installed on residential properties, is the highest it has ever been. Energy awareness, feed-in-tarrifs and the ever growing expense of heating, gas and electricity have all led to a massive increase in the installation of these systems.
As there are no British Standards that regulate the mechanical installation of these systems, there is nothing to ensure that they are properly secure against the elements. Poor design, bad workmanship and a lack of guidelines for installation has lead to several incidents of buildings being damaged from the rain and the wind.
The NHBC Foundation has released a set of guidance notes which show appropriate methods for installaing renewable energy systems on all different types of roofs to properly protect from the UK’s heavy rain, strong winds and unpredictable snow. Hopefully you will all find something useful in this free, extensive guide to the installation of renewable energy systems.
